Why is our beach unique?

Temperature plays an important role in the lives of sea turtles. The ocean temperature determines when mating occurs ottshore and when female turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Temperatures in the nest also determine the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer temperatures produce females; a cooler temperature produces males.

Beaches are important because the white sand is slightly cooler than the beaches further

south, therefore, it is thought that our local beaches produce many of the males necessary to the survival of the species.
